IPL Thrives Whilst Aussies Chase Old Highs

The IPL is impossible to grasp unless you’ve lived it. Neon kits, shifting pitches, and chaotic names swirl in a Martian-like spectacle. Backed by the ICC, it looms like Dune’s sandworm, ready to devour us all. In 2008, a new era of cricket was ushered in with its value at $10 million. By its second year, it was valued at $2 billion. The growth chart looked like Everest. Cricket’s financial power sits firmly in India, where the BCCI now claims nearly 40% of the ICC’s annual earnings—more than four times what any other board receives. In the global game, no one holds more sway. Shockingly, the Aussies continue to operate at a huge loss year on year. Sumanta Sen’s data-driven article for Reuters outlines the BCCI’s overpowering influence on the game played in over one hundred countries.

A World Test Mess

What do you get when you mix the ICC, a mismanaged tournament, horrendous scheduling, and zero care for smaller nations? The World Test Championship! Badum-tshh. Wisden has dropped its latest batch of award winners—and taken a sharp swing at the ICC in the process. Its verdict on the WTC? A “shambles disguised as a showpiece.” Even for Wisden, that’s a proper slam. But you can’t argue with one of the game’s most respected voices. The 2025–27 WTC is set to stick with its current nine-team, uneven fixture model. Wisden editor Lawrence Booth has called for a fairer, all-play-all format, highlighting how South Africa reached this year’s final without facing England or Australia. But politics still cloud everything—India’s refusal to tour Pakistan remains a major block, underlining its grip on the sport’s global power structure.
Rohit Retires!

Rohit Sharma has stepped down from Test match cricket. One of India's most elegant and iconic batters calls time on a legendary career. In a cricketing nation where players are gods and chairmen battling for power, where the skyline brims with Kohli Enterprises and Dhoni Industries, Rohit was the gentle, understated, and measured. A languid style and a relaxed personality in a world built on pure intensity. But his batting? A joyous experience. Composed against 90mph snorters. Poised, elegant, and in complete control, rather than destructive. But make no mistake — he could be destructive when needed. The tools in his arsenal meant dismantling bowling attacks with the grace of a conductor guiding his orchestra. Each boundary was another rising crescendo in India’s great symphony. But now, it’s time for the big bear to sleep on the Test stage.
