The Hundred Is Finding Its Flow

We’ve promoted it, we’ve argued about it, we’ve stuffed it into an exploding calendar, hell—we've even tried to flog it. Blink and you might miss it. But, here it is. The Hundred has arrived, and you know what; it’s actually pretty good. It's like avoiding an old friend, then realising it's actually nice to see them.

While the ECB might still be trying to shift it to the highest bidder (cough, Amercian billionaires, cough), its little IPL vanity project might actually be starting to work some magic. Television viewership for men’s games is up 8% to 400,000, while women’s matches have grown 20% to 132,000 on Sky Sports. It’s also not your average cricket crowd, which is a good thing. Looking out its grounds packed with more women, more kids, and less—how do I say it—middle aged white blokes. With overseas stars like Adam Zampa, Alice Capsey, Trent Boult and Heather Knight, you have my attention.

No Sixes In Sussex?!

They say cricket is a batsmen’s game. Well, not at Southwick and Shoreham CC. Following years of locals complaining about damaged cars, windows and roof tiles, the locals who live near the pitch have finally won the battle to ban players from hitting sixes. First six = warning and no run. Second six = out.

“One time, my baby brother was outside in the garden and my mother found a cricket ball in his pram.” — Mary Gill, 80

“If you buy a house next to a cricket ground, then you’ve got to expect a few cricket balls in your garden.” — SSCC batsmen, N/A

Dutch Cricket Is TopKlasse

Credit: Julian de Mey // @julianjdm

Welcome to TopKlasse, a blend of high-level cricket and a close-knit community. It’s also the leading domestic league in Holland, driving the Dutch cricket scene forward and producing some top cricketers in the process.

Talking to Julian de Mey, HBS Cricketer, Former Dutch International and talented photographer, he had this to say…

“One unique aspect of the Topklasse is the presence of talented young overseas players from countries like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India and Pakistan. These players, who might otherwise head to England, choose to spend a season in the Netherlands, adding an international flavour to the competition.”

We need to head to Holland…
