Captain Pope and (another) new cricket format is coming...

England’s New Skipper

Sadly, we won’t see our Stokesy for the remainder of this summer after England’s mercurial skipper tore his hamstring in The Hundred this week. As a result, Pope has been promoted from vice and will be captaining the side for the rest of this summer's test matches. File this one under ‘things you love to see’. He will be the 82nd player to captain England in a men's Test match cricket, and England fans can rest easy knowing the nation is in safe hands. In 2021, Ollie stepped into captain Surrey against Glamorgan and produced a casual knock of 274 in his only innings. It’s a job built for the lad from Surrey, let’s see if he can bump that average.

Not ANOTHER One…

You have to hand it to the Americans. They’re giving cricket a real good go. The latest initiative on American soil to drive interest towards the beautiful game came from the National Cricket League USA and a brand new format - Sixty Strikes. Taking place at the University of Texas at Dallas in October this year, the tournament will feature the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Jason Roy, Shahid Afridi and Tamim Iqbal. Sixty Strikes is estimated to take 90 minutes to play. Some are paraphrasing it as “cricket meets Coachella!”. We doubt it.

Jimmy Fancies Franchise Cricket

James Anderson is the personification of Test Match cricket—an institution of the ECB. For 25 years, we’ve watched Jimmy bowl in that pearly white England kit, knicking off Kholi, Tendulkar, Smith, Ponting, Sangakkara, Azam, and many more. James Anderson and the Dukes New Ball is a duo written into cricketing folklore.

But it's finally time to see if he can do it on a (not so) cold night in Mumbai. Jimmy’s considering getting into the franchise game, and you can’t blame him. It’ll certainly take some getting used to seeing our Jim in the sponsor-overloaded, garish IPL kits going at 10s an over. Welcome to the new World, Mr. Anderson. It's time to put away that line and length and get working on that slower ball.
